A leading Religious Zionist hesder yeshiva founded by Rav Yehuda Amital and Rav Aharon Lichtenstein, combining rigorous Talmud study with intellectual openness; its Dr. William Major Overseas Students Program integrates English-speaking students into the main beit midrash.

Depends on the friend
Depends a lot on the type of kid You need to be self motivated and up for spending lots of time on relatively dry material, if that's you, there's nothing better, if that's not you, you should look somewhere else

Outside of Jerusalem, not much to do in the area. Walked to Kfar Etzion for dinner sometimes

There aren't really free evenings
I wouldn’t say there were free evenings. The day goes until 11 PM and starts at 7 AM, so realistically no one’s going out. Plus there isn’t anywhere to go. There’s Bein haZmanim and out shabboses, but any time you’re in Gush during the day, you’re also there far into the night, so I wouldn’t say there were “free evenings”

How much did your experience depend on which specific staff/rabbis/madrichim you got?
I didn’t seem to think that there are levels to an iyun Gemara shiur in morning Seder, rather each RAM had their own way of teaching and whichever shiur you’re in, that’s how you will learn
It also depends on how much you try to create connections with each rav. Theres every opportunity to do so, it just requires some effort
Each morning seder Ra"m has a different style. But besides that, everything is the same for everyone
How much were you treated as an adult vs. managed like a student?
There are (virtually) no official rules. There are very much so expectations of what you should be doing though.
How much freedom did you have over your own time and choices?
No one is breathing over your shoulder every minute. But, if over the course of a prolonged period of time you are not present in yeshiva, they will definitely talk to you.
How much prior Torah learning background did you need to keep up?
I came from Australia where my background in Torah was very minuscule
It helps to have, but you will not be lost without
Most guys come in fairly strong, but there is the infrastructure to build up guys with less background
How much free time do you have outside of a learning schedule?
You have off from 1-3, at dinner from 7:15-8, and after night Seder that ends at 11. (Shiur on Friday ends at 10-10:15)
Put together, there are around three hours of free time each day
Lunch, some fri afternoon, out shabbat once every 3 weeks. No one's stopping from slacking off, but if you stick to the yeshiva schedule theres very limited free time
If you know, what type of units did the top third of people from your cohort actually go to?
SHIRYON
What do you mean by top third, most people drafted infantry, a bunch drafted to shiryon, also a bunch drafted to jobnik and a few drafted to sayeret.
How much were you accompanied and mentored through the service?
There are resources for one who wants them
Me personally less so, I wasn't really looking for it, but those who are, tons of older guys to lean on. Worth it just for the gush hayalim bodedim chat, a group chat of 200+ alums who were or are in the army
How much did the program guide and support you through actually signing up and drafting?
There isn't much specific support for overseas students but there is robust programming for the whole yeshiva
How was the food, realistically, day to day?
Lunch (meat) is usually good, breakfast and dinner (dairy) are usually not as good.
Lunches were consistently good, dinners were consistently bad. Breakfast was ok

How would you rate the living conditions?
Much better now than when I was shana Alex, back then there were no ACs, they've since installed them. The outside space is stunning, green with trees, flowers etc

How available are resources for learning hebrew, (ie ulpan)?
No Ulpan, but there are shiurim in Hebrew. Also, there are Israeli students to speak to, learn with, sit with at meals, etc.
You learn the language from the constant exposure
There aren't really built-in resources, but if you attend the Hebrew-language programming for the whole yeshiva, you can improve a lot. If you speak frequently with Israelis, you can basically become fluent.

How much of the day did you need to use Hebrew vs. able to fall back on English?
I spoke Hebrew very little, but many Shiurim/sichot are given in Hebrew, so I did hear a lot of Hebrew.
In Shana Bet when you are in an Israeli shiur, you need more Hebrew
Up to you, you can keep yourself in an english bubble or force yourself into an all hebrew environment
How much prior Hebrew did you need to not feel lost?
There were students who came in with no Hebrew but worked really hard and learned a lot
Did the program give you a real social circle of Israelis to lean on?
Almost all my friends today are Israeli

If you're a stereotypical gush guy you'll be surrounded by people like you
How much do you feel you gained close friendships that lasted?
Every year, the head of the program welcomes you and says, “turn your head to your left and to your right. At least one person sitting in this room is someone who you don’t know yet, but he will be an עד at your wedding”. This was true for all of the עדים at my wedding except for one of the עדי כתובה.

Every year is exactly the same
