How much did your connection to israel grow
I came to the mechina wanting to draft machal and serve for a year and a half but already after my first couple of months I decided to make Aliyah and do a full, meaningful service
My connection to Israel before arriving was pretty good so felt like it stayed the same
How much did your Hebrew actually improve, honestly, by the end?
At the end of the day there’s a decently sized American program and many English speakers so you end up speaking a decent amount of English. However in my second year I decided to make a much greater emphasis on learning Hebrew and speaking to Israelis which was when my Hebrew really improved
I arrived to keshet with not a word of Hebrew, and by the end of the year I was having ok conversations with my roommates, I also stayed for Shana Bet which is another half a year and when I finished then I was having full conversations and had no problems understanding when I arrived to the army
How did you typically spend your free evenings during the program?
You don’t have any places to go to in a moshav so either it was playing sports on the court down the road or going to the next place over and getting some food and coming back
How much did your experience depend on which specific staff/rabbis/madrichim you got?
Every rabbi has a different approach to different subjects so you simply have to find which one is for you and you are fine
How much were you treated as an adult vs. managed like a student?
Keshet believes in responsibility at the end of the day you are preparing to join the army and that requires a lot of it , but you are still in an institution so there is still that level of teacher student difference
How much prior Torah learning background did you need to keep up?
I arrived to keshet with a basic learning background and I was able to keep up and if every now and then I needed to slow down a little I would speak to the rabbi and we would figure out what to do from there
How much free time do you have outside of a learning schedule?
You have a pretty packed schedule but you have a nice break in the afternoon as well as in the evening at reasonable hours for time to calm down before bed
If you know, what type of units did the top third of people from your cohort actually go to?
Out of my room of 8 people which stayed strong for both first year and second 6 went to commando/sayeret the other went to an elite intelligence unit, also most have gone on to be commanders in these units
How much were you accompanied and mentored through the service?
In keshet they also believe in alumni’s helping out and I am in touch with a few who still help out now during my service
How much did the program guide and support you through actually signing up and drafting?
You are will need to do most of the sign up and drafting yourselves but the rabbis and others with help with what you need
How was the food, realistically, day to day?
When I was there the food was not great at all but it has improved greatly since I left
It is your average Israeli yeshiva food, good prep for getting used to the army food
How would you rate the living conditions?
They have a newly built dorm building, each room has a toilet and shower, and you share a spacious room with 8/9 people each with there own closet
How much privacy/personal space did you have?
Israelis do like to get close but you get used to it and if you don’t want you just move away as you will be fine, there is lots of space in the mechina and on the moshav which you can be by yourselves
How much did the hebrew that you learned in the program stick or fade?
I had to make the effort to speak Hebrew and get out there but once I did it stuck with me even more because I wanted to do it

How available are resources for learning hebrew, (ie ulpan)?
There is Ulpan but for me the really way I learned was from my friends and roommates because they are all Israeli and you pick it up from hearing around, (recommended taking a pocket size notebook and writing new words that you hear and practicing after )
How much of the day did you need to use Hebrew vs. able to fall back on English?
It's all up to you, who you hang out with, etc.
How much prior Hebrew did you need to not feel lost?
You learn hebrew here, so everybody feels lost at the beginning of the year
At the beginning I was lost but there are enough people that speak English and can help you out
How much did the program strengthen your intention to build a life in Israel?
I came to the mechina very unsure of my path forward whether making aliyah or doing a full service and by the end of my time there I knew 100% that I wanted to do a full meaningful service and stay in Israel after I finished as well
Did the program give you a real social circle of Israelis to lean on?
You’re roomed with Israelis and at a certain point in the year you join their shiurim
I am still in touch with most of my guys from first year and in touch with pretty much all from second
How much do you feel you gained close friendships that lasted?
I’m still in touch and go for Shabbat every now and then even a year and half after leaving
Overall, how was the program?
Amazing religious, pre army academy/yeshiva time for learning and time for army preparation as well as making great friends and brothers along the way
How much are you still connected to learning now, after the program?
I still learn daily in the army at least 45 minutes
How well did the program prepare you for the army?
Keshet prepares you both physically, mentally and spiritually for you to have the best and most meaningful service you can have
Who would this program be wrong for?
People who dont actually want to learn torah
